Department of Political Science
The Department of Political Science at the Osmania University College for Women is one of the oldest in the college and has always contributed to the academic culture of the college.  The department has had many stalwarts in the area of Political Science working here and heading it too.  Some of the luminaries were Prof. Philips, Prof. Rama Melkote, Prof. Kausar Azam among many who were well known within the scholarly community of political scientists.  Later on the younger members of the department have carried on the tradition of excellence.

The department has always believed that both research and teaching played an equally important role in shaping the academic traditions of the college.  The teachers in the department are recruited by the University and are therefore well acquainted with the necessity for research as one of the prime need for good and meaningful teaching.  The department has always changed the syllabus to keep up with the changes taking place in society.  Also the in the 1980’s the department was seen by the university as being one with pivotal importance in the dissemination of post graduate education to women students and hence this college and department were given an M.A. course.  Since then the department has produced interested students who have qualified in the UGC JRF examination and many have gone on to pursue research at the level of M.Phil and Ph.D.  Many of them have also become lecturers in various colleges.

In the late 1990’s the department took another important decision to start a communication course that has been allied with political science and its concerns.  The course is now in its tenth year and has produced students who have gone on to be employed by companies like Google, Deloitte, Patny Computers, RK Swamy BBDO, Lowe Lintas Advertising etc.

The department is constantly upgrading its courses and believes that in the future too there is scope for innovation.  One of the areas that the department is focusing upon is the area of policy studies.  In the age of globalization there is a need for constantly evaluating policy initiatives and suggesting new directions for policy makers.  The department is confident of its future and will continue with its two pronged approach of research and teaching.
